Why I'm No Photographer. Yet.

Each May, our moms group from church meets at the park.

Last year, I was taking pictures with my little Canon point and shoot.

This year, I had my new T3i along to practice.

Ugh.

So hard to have to think about every. single. picture.

I am NOT complaining... but really... wow, photography is a lot of work!

And, I am no photographer yet.

Some pictures are good.

Some are just off... and I'm not sure what to do to fix it.

ISO on a sunny day is a mystery.

Not being able to see my screen clearly because of the bright sun makes it really hard to adjust settings when I'm not even sure what I'm seeing.

Editing can help.

But... I'm not quite sure what I'm doing there either.

Kids on the move while trying to adjust settings. complicated.

"Wait! Stay there... Mommy has to change one thing!" I say while I'm thinking, "Do not turn it to Auto, do not turn it to auto."

Ah... but the fun of the challenge.

To learn. To discover and figure it out.

It might take me years...

But I'll sure be capturing the moments along the way.

I'm no photographer... just a Mommy taking pictures.

But, a mommy taking pictures who wants to rise to the challenge of this crazy camera.

One picture at a time.

The Christmas Disclaimer

My friend Christina @ Get Joy just posted a Christmas Memories post.

And I loved it.

Why?

Well, although her family is super cute and fun and it looks like they had a wonderful Christmas, that is not necessarily why I loved her post.

I loved it because I LOVE the disclaimer that she put at the bottom of her memories post.

She says, "Disclaimer: Now before you all think my life is perfect, or any blogger's Christmas post for that matter, very few people write about all the things that go wrong during the holidays. You don’t want to hear about my grumpy, fighting, tired kids (yeah, I am talking about those adorable children in the pictures above). You don’t want to hear about my short temper when things get stressed. We all deal with that stuff. Keep in mind when reading these types of blogs that the purpose is to focus on all the Good that God is and how He sustains us when things are difficult. Because let me tell you, I had some whining kids…and He kept me sane. hehehehehehe"

Can I just second that?

From our Tennessee vacation at Thanksgiving to our Christmas vacation in Michigan, there were some total disclaimer moments.

Even if the pictures didn't say so.

Even if you couldn't tell by our happy, vacation faces.

Things happened.

Disclaimer moments.

Jeremy's leaking truck window that got the girls toys and blankets all wet.

Realizing that the tour company that we booked through was very much less than honest and it was going to cost us.

Three girls riding together in the one seat of an extended cab Ford F150. for hours. You can imagine the whining and fussing that went with that, I'm sure.

Spouse miscommunications. Yes. They happen. Often.

Loosing vital pieces to fixing Abby's broken DS.

And not finding them anywhere.

Having to buy new pieces.

Having the DS break for good.

Getting a new-to-us DS with Christmas money.

Tired cousins. Throwing up babies. Tired sisters (young and old).

Two granddaughters who played with two bars of soap in Grandma's tub. Decorative soap. Super soapy water.

15 people sharing 2 bathrooms.

Kids forgetting to flush. and wash hands.

Toys all over the floor.

A lost dress.

Shattered Christmas ball ornaments on the hardwood floor during Christmas dinner.

A gazillion dirty dishes to wash.

Tearful yelling moment between my girls on the day we were heading home.

Tearful apologies made to those who had to witness it.

Laundry, messy house, misplaced presents, broken toys, dumped suitcases.

Opinions. Misunderstandings. Moods. Stolen quiet moments...

No... we don't take pictures of those things.

But they happen. To all of us.

That is a part of family. of people. of learning to live together in peace.

Don't forget that "disclaimer" as you browse through everyone's gorgeous Christmas posts.

Think of the stories behind the pictures and remember we are all real people blogging real lives.

Ups and downs. Good and bad.

It is all there. Behind the lens.

Holiday Bokeh

I Heart Faces is having a Holiday Bokeh (that beautiful blur in the background) challenge so I thought I'd post one that I took with my new Canon EF 50mm 1.8 lens.

Elayna was in the school room at her desk. I snapped this picture of her angled so the Christmas tree was in the background.

There are a lot more fun bokeh pictures over at I Heart Faces today!

Do you have a holiday bokeh picture?

My Girls

Every Christmas I take pictures of my girls in front of the tree

(Yes, for you photographers out there... these pictures are very warm. I have since learned that my WB was set to "Flash" which was warming UP my pictures. Another learning moment, thanks Heather!)

The girls got Amazin' Hamsters in their stockings and Annalise and Abby carry them everywhere.

My sweet girls...

A Family Christmas

Well, you know we never do anything quite like anybody else... everything is always an adventure over here.

Christmas is no exception.

We always do our family Christmas before Christmas.

It is one of those Goodwin traditions.

This year, that meant 10 days before Christmas.

Last night was our Christmas Eve...

The girls know about Santa, if you know what I mean, and they always hang around while "Santa" eats the cookies and drinks the milk. Then, it was off to bed for the Goodwin girls.

They were up around 6:30 but they didn't come and get us until 7:09am.

Daddy read the Christmas story, the girls opened their stockings and gifts...

Daddy got some Slim Jims and, I know I will regret this, but he also got a harmonica. He wanted one. What can I say.

(side note: I had been using a flash for these Christmas morning pictures. Not enough light. Not enough patience to fiddle with my camera to find a setting that wouldn't be blurry. Too early in the morning to care...)

Then, I opened my gift.

A Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II lens.

I quickly snapped that baby on my DSLR because I had heard that this lens can take awesome inside, low light pictures. And then, I realized how much I still have to learn about photography. Sarah, I really respect what you do... seriously.

Which lens? What light? What settings? Ah!

All of this flashed through my mind rather quickly... we had more presents to open.

Instead of a bunch of gifts for everyone, we just got one family gift.

A Wii.

We are the last family in Ohio to get one I'm sure, but we finally took the plunge and got a family toy.

The girls screamed their heads off.

They were so excited.

"We finally got a Wii!"

And the screaming continued.

I caught some quick pictures with my new lens...

Oh, so much to learn...

How on earth do you get them all to be the same color tone? Sarah?

Granted, I probably changed settings in between each of these pictures. But, oh...

As I played with my lens, the family played with the Wii.

It was a hit.

Abby found the best seat in the house...

(side note: yes, she does have a black eye from an unfortunate sisterly tug of war with a door)

And Jeremy let her sit there for quite awhile.

My family.

I am so blessed. God is so good.

Merry Christmas...

Not My Husband

When you have opportunities to take awesome pictures of God's beautiful creation...

To take in the grandeur and greatness around you...

To marvel at the small things

To capture trees and mountains

And plants getting ready for the cold days of winter...

Well, you would sure wouldn't find MY husband walking around with this plant in his beard. Nope, not him!

And, you certainly wouldn't find me walking with him looking like that.

Or taking a picture of him like that.

Nope, not me!

Not when there are hundreds of other gorgeous things to take pictures of... we sure aren't that silly!

Joining in with Mckmama today!

PS: Does anybody know what that plant is that somehow found its way into Jeremy's beard??
