Edited to participate in Mamabear's Alphabitty Moments: N is for Nurse!
Today was Annalise's 5 year old Well Check-Up at the Family Doctor. Due to the recent jump in doctor's visits around here, she did NOT want to go.
She refused to even get out of her pajama's and cried, "I want to stay HOME!!"
After counting down from 10, she got dressed but whined and whined about how much she didn't want to go to the doctor.
And, the poor baby didn't even know yet that she was actually going to be getting her 5 year immunizations today.
My heart was torn... to tell her or not to tell her.
I told her. She took it quite well, thanks to Sid the Science Kid's shot episode. She knew the shot was good for her body but oh, did she cry. and cry. and cry.
A donut from Tim Horton's calmed her down (I did not bribe her, it just happened to come free with my coffee but it sure was a nice perk!) and we entered the office in a good mood.
Dancing...
and twirling...
She was weighed and measured. Temp and blood pressure. Chat with the doctor. He doesn't seem to be too concerned. He thinks we will end up with a fragile capillary diagnosis. He wants more info about her foot and wants to see the blood work study that we haven't gotten back yet, but he was very encouraging.
Then, he checked her shot record and said she needed 3 shots. Yikes!
After how Annalise acted when she got her blood work done, I knew we were in for a fight!
The doctor left the room...
and the whining began.
"Mommy, I have precious skin! My arms are precious, my legs are precious, my skin is precious! I have precious skin and I don't want my skin to have shots!! Shots are CREEPY! and Ouchy!!!!!!"
"Let's go home, Mommy... If I was in charge, we would go home. If I was in charge, I could go to sleep when I want, I could play when I want and I could never go to the doctor. I wish there weren't any doctors!!"
"Please can we go home?? No shots, Mommy. Shots are creepy and I'm precious! My arms are so cute so they can't have shots."
"Really no rooster (booster :) shots!!!"
I am not lying. These were the words coming out of her 5 year old mouth. Somewhere along the line it sank in that she is precious and shots are not.
While we were waiting for the nurse, Annalise had to go potty so we headed to the bathroom. I eyed the nurse getting the shots ready and said, "Are you hearing her in there? You are going to need some help."
The nurse smiled and said, "We heard and I've got help."
Her "help" was another nurse. A REALLY smart nurse.
The helpful nurse, who I think was actually just office staff and not actually a nurse, had the brightest, smartest and most creative idea ever.
A Superhero Cape.
(don't you love the HUGE wad of gum in her mouth?)
Annalise willingly took her shirt off, let the helpful nurse tie a "cape" on her that had "super powers" and "made her not afraid of shots."
It worked! Annalise sat there, let them give her 3 shots without pulling away or crying or pushing or screaming!
A-Maz-ing.
Reminds me of another REALLY smart nurse at the dentist a few years ago...
Gotta LOVE REALLY smart nurses.

Your five year old is definitely a very smart one, and you are a great mom yourself for telling her the truth about the shot/s she was getting that day...

Thanks for coming by my blog the other day!

That's awesome that the cape worked! It's amazing what a super cape can do! :) I think an Ohio get together sounds like a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a good idea! Kudos to the nurse :)
ReplyDeleteI love creative nurses...good with kids nurses. If it is anywhere close to Toledo I am all for it. I am in Michigan, but not too far from the border of Ohio.
